Handle 60. FC-AFC WHITEWATER’S KLONDIKE GOLDRUSH -DAWSON, “Dawson,” BLM, Bill Barstow

Came to the line at 1:28 pm

LF -  Drove deep of the bird - turned and quartered his way down to the bird

LR - Drove out beyond the fall area - circled back to work into the fall and grab his bird

RF - Nice job on his flyer

RR -  Made a pass short - then set up an extended hunt deep and right - the dog was handled with difficulty to the bird


Handle 59. FC SEASIDE’S LL COOL J, JR, “Cool J,” BLM, Craig Crook

Came to the line at 1:14 pm

LF -  Came into the area - ran past it - hunted high - came back down and got it

LR - Ran out to the area - overran the mark - got left and deep - came back in and scooped up his bird

RF - Good mark!

RR -  Went out way deep - handled back to this bird 


Handle 58. FC DISCOVERING NEW LANDS, “Chris,” BLM, Ty Rorem

Came to the line at 1:03 pm

LF -  Across the field and up the hill and around on the hill - hunted around the huge cedar and then down to the bird

LR- Found the guns and moved to the field for a quick retrieve

RF - Very nice job on his flyer

RR -  Went on a good line and then faded right - missed the bird and went deep into the pond and the far trees - handled back to this bird


Handle Rerun 36. FC B&B’S GOSSIP GIRL, “Rumor,” BLF, Marc Patton

Came back to the line at 12:55 pm for a Rerun

LF - Very nice!

LR -  Straight in to the bird!

RF - Stopped to sniff a quick hay bale - continued on out past the guns to arrive deep right just behind the flyer fall and she came home with her flyer.

RR - Excellent line to the cover - splashed in the far pond and was handled back to this bird.



Double Handle 56. FC-AFC TRUMARC’S MAGNIFICENT FRANCHISE, “Rex,” BLM, Ronald Aronoff

Came to the line at 12:42 pm

LF -  Rex worked the fall area pretty thoroughly  - worked his way up behind the tree and around - back to the area where he worked out his bird.

LR- Stopped short for a loop -went towards the gunners hide - back to the area of the fall and located the bird

RF - Out towards the RR - his hunt pattern took him deep - crossed over towards the Flyer guns where he was handled and retrieved the Flyer bird.

RR -  His line started him off towards the flyer area - he was stopped and handled to the RR mark.

LF -  Out to the fall area - missed - climbed the hill and circled back down to locate her bird.

LR- Nice line out - but got deep - climbed the hill deep left - hunted deep and then came back in and got it!

RF - Dove past the guns and went deep and right between the 2 stations - worked it out and got her flyer

RR - Nice!




Pick-up 52. FC RAIN’S BASES LOADED, GRAND SLAM, “Slam,” BLM, Jim Beck

Came to the line at 12:19 pm

LF -  Went out right of the tree and started to hunt in front of the guns - but a ways away from this long flyer - made passes behind the tree and much of the hillside - worked his way over to the fall and the bird.

RR- Overran the area - dog had to be picked up



51. FC-AFC BAYOU TECHE EXPRESS, “Ryan,” BLF, Lauren Hays

Came to the line at 12:07 pm

LF -  She ran out left of the bird and drove deep - continued to hunt the hillside before finally coming down to her bird.

LR- Into the area where the gunners stand - came around the holding blind and around the font to locate the bird.

RF - Got her flyer in good shape!

RR - Established an extended hunt - but came up with the bird.

Pick-up 50. FC SLR’s OVERCHARGED, “Amp,” BLM, JD Babb

Came to the line at 11:57 am

LF -  Out to the far hillside for a hunt - hunt deeper and then came back down - up and back for an extended hunt deep -worked back to it and got it.

LR- Past the area and went deep - very deep - up behind the flyer area - had to handle back to this bird.

RR - Perfect mark!

RF - Over the 2 berms and out - hunted deep left of the guns away from the bird - had to get the guns out to help the dog. Dog is picked up.



 

Handle Rerun 44. FC MONTERREY FARMS SOUTHERN CHARM QA2, “Scarlett,” BLF, Ty Rorem

Came back to the line at 11:45 am for their Rerun

LF -  Under the arc - up the hill and back down to her bird

LR- Under the arc and went way deep  - out wide left and continued to hunt very deep - handled back to the bird.

RF - Out past the guns and hunted deep left - worked back in towards the guns and moved right and got it.

RR -  Go deep - came to the guns and worked the area and she got her bird.

 Wilma an Mark came to the line at 11:40 and had a No-Bird, they will be back after 6 dogs

Handle 47. FC 4 PAWS STINGRAY, “Vette,” BLM, Isaac Langerud

Came to the line at 11:22 am

LF -  Good line - left of the tree - drove the hill and started an extended hunt up the hill - gradually encompassing the lower ground and he located the bird

LR- Hunted deep and then up the hill behind the guns - caught site of the gunners and started in that direction but was handled to the bird.

RF -  Hunted the area with numerous passes and came up with his bird.

RR - Went deep and hunted for a bit - worked his way in and got it!


46. AFC KC’S PARTNER IN CRIME CRONY QA2, “Crony,” BLM, Kenny Cox

Came to the line at 11:14 am

LF -  Came into the area right - hunted wide right and then came back around and got it

LR- Came into the area a little left - kept driving - had a couple loops deep and worked his way to the bird.

RR - Out to the area a little right - turned into the area and located the bird

RF -  Good angle out to the area - arrived close to the gunners - turned right and worked out the bird

 Rumor and Marc came back to the line at 11:12 for a Rerun and had another No-Bird, they will be back after 6 dogs

45. FC-AFC THE TIN MAN, “Tor,” BLM, Marcy Wright

Came to the line at 11:00 am

LF -  Out under the arc and all the way up the hill - deep up the hill - low circling the tree - this hen was hard to dig out - up and down the hill - around and around - hunting deep of the gunner - had a huge hunt but he got it

LR- Out to the retired station and circled several times - expanded his hunt and got it!

RR - Out by the guns - quick left to the bird

RF -  Had a hunt, but he got it

 Scarlett and Ty came to the line at 10:58 and had a No-Bird, they will be back after 6 dogs

Pick-up 41. FC-AFC LAIRD’S CYNFUL SEASIDE DREAM, “Lottie,” BLF, Al Arthur

Came to the line at 10:48 am

LF -  Pulled right a bit and then corrected herself and went in to get her bird.

LR- Went deep, back around the backside of the gunners - out to the field with another large loop - worked her way to the bird.

RF - Worked the area deep between the flyer gunners and the RR bird - attempted to handle but the dog was picked up

  

 

Handle 39. FC SWEETHALLS POCKETFUL OF SAFE MOORINGS, “Dock,” YLM, Alan Pleasant

Came to the line at 10:40 am

LF -  Circled short and continued to hunt right and away from the fall - worked back down to his bird and got it

LR- Nice mark - straight to the fall area and the bird.

RF - Started to hunt short - covered the area behind the guns - got deep for a few turns and then went right and located the bird.

RR -  Came in right of the gunners - was handled after starting a hunt short and right - he got it.


 

37. FC-AFC SEASIDE’S GOT THAT ITCH AGAIN, “Ivy,” BLF, Craig Crook

Came to the line at 10:30 am

LF -  Came in just right of the bird - continued on but made a small recovery to come back down the hill and locate her bird.

LR- Started hunting short - went wide left and then back to the area and she got her bird.

RF - Came into the area from behind the gunners - after a bit of a hunt - she rolled right and worked out her flyer.

RR - Straight to the bird on this one!

The first test dog to the line for this series was Whimsey with handler Betsy Broyd .... Whimsey came to the line at 9:57 am

LF - Whimsey went deep for an extended hunt -  gunners stepped forward to bring Whimsey to the bird

LR - Out to the area - turned left - recovered and went left to get her bird

RR - Excellent Mark

RF - Very Nice Flyer

The next test dog to the line for this series was Earl with handler John Higgins .... Earl came to the line at 10:06 am

LF - Earl hunted right and deep - gunners came out to help

LR - 2/3 of the way out, Earl cut left and back over to the live guns - the retired gunner stepped out to help

RR - Went way right and was handled to this bird.

RF -  Checked down about half way there - moved on but needed to get help on this one in the end.

5th Series Test Description

904 Old Dawson Rd., Smithville, GA

Land Quad with 2 Flyers and 2 Retired Guns

Test 5 is a mixed bag quad with 2 flyers. The field is a bowl with the mat facing S.W. There are berms on the right side and a steep hill on the left side with a lake in the background.

The order of the birds will be as follows:

Bird #1 is a retired pair of gunners who will come out to shoot and then throw a dead Hen Pheasant angled back right to left landing approximately 212 yards from the mat. (we will refer to this bird as RR for Right Retired)

Bird #2 is a Duck Drake Flyer. This station is located to the right of Bird #1. This Flyer is thrown and then shot to the right, angled back, landing approximately 279 yards from the mat. (we will refer to this bird as RF for Right Flyer)

Bird #3 is a retired gun station located to the left of Bird #1. They come out and shoot, then throw a Dead Rooster to the right landing approximately 159 yards from the mat. (we will refer to this bird as LR for Left Retired)

Bird #4 is a on the far left side of this line up of 4 birds. This is a Hen Pheasant Flyer, thrown to the left, landing approximately 195 yards from the mat. (we will refer to this bird as LF for Left Flyer)

This test is taking approximately 8-9 minutes per dog to complete.

3rd & 4th Series – Land Blind and Water Blind

85 Dogs Started this Series

Test Dogs started out this series on Monday morning at 11:42 am, beginning with "Earl," handled by John Higgins and then "Whimsey," handled by Betsy Broyd. Tuesday morning we just had a single test dog to the line. (Earl and John)

The first running dog of this series was #9 FC-AFC JS’S JUMPIN’ JACK FLASH, “Jack,” with handler Chad WorsellThey came to the line Monday afternoon at 12:05 pm, but there was a small change made to the test, so they went back into the running order to run the adjusted test again at the end.


The weather for this series started out quite cold with temps in the 40's and 50's and sunny skies. Tuesday morning was very brisk starting out in the mid 20's and low 30's, with clear skies again. Winds were consistently around 5-8 mph both days.

Here is how things turned out for the 3rd and 4th Series …

Our last running dog for this Series was  the rerun for dog #
FC-AFC JS’S JUMPIN’ JACK FLASH, “Jack,” with handler Chad Worsell. They completed the test today at 8:27 am.

85 dogs were sent from the line in this series, taking a total of 6 hours and 51 minutes, which averages out to be just over 4.5 minutes per dog. 

We will be moving on to the 5th Series next! Callbacks to come - we will post them on the blog as soon as we have them!

Good Morning - Day 4

 Good Morning Everyone and Welcome to the 4th day of the National Open Retriever Championship! 

This morning we are finishing up the 3rd and 4th Series and then moving on to the 5th at the Barstow Property!

This morning has started out VERY COLD with temps only in the mid 20's! The expected high for the day is only about 54 degrees this afternoon with sunny skies expected to last throughout the day despite the brisk temperatures. These are very cold conditions for Georgia at this time of year. 

We will provide updates with any changing conditions as the day progresses. We hope you all keep warm out there and bundle up! Stay tuned to the blog as we prepare to finish up the 3rd and 4th Series before moving on to the 5th later this morning!

We have 16 dogs left to run this series – Best of Luck to Everyone!
